Evelyn Street Waste Collection Changes Due to Road Work - June 21, 2024

The Municipality has contracted Miller Paving Limited to undertake the microsurfacing of Evelyn Street in Almonte.

The works are scheduled to take place Friday, June 21. Residents on Evelyn Street are asked to please ensure your waste is set out before 7 a.m. to guarantee collection. Waste collection will take place from 7 to 8 a.m.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, Council recognized the 2024 Mississippi Mills Photo Contest winners. A total of 274 photos were submitted in the contest, which ran for the month of May. Council selected 10 finalists with the community voting on their favourites. First prize went to Ryan Donovan, who captured Almonte and the Mississippi River at night. Burn Risk Status Raised to Level 2

Due to the extreme heat, the Mississippi Mills Fire Department has raised the burn risk status to a Level 2, effective June 19, 2024. This means conditions for burning are suitable, but caution should be exercised due to dry conditions.

When open air burning, the Mississippi Mills Fire Department recommends residents:

  • Avoid burning in areas with brown, dead grass

  • Abstain from burning in windy conditions

  • Always keep a water source nearby when burning

  • Never leave a fire unattended

National Indigenous Peoples Day: June 21

June 19, 2024

As the celebration of National Indigenous History Month continues, on June 21st we will mark National Indigenous Peoples Day – a day to honour the heritage, culture, resilience and diversity of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples across Canada. June 21st also has spiritual significance as the Summer Solstice, bringing forward a new season of life.

New Location for Summer Solstice Celebration – June 20, 2024

Due to the extreme heat in the forecast, the Summer Solstice Celebration originally to be held in Riverfront Park on Thursday, June 20 will now take place at the John Levi Community Centre.

Set for 6 to 9 p.m., this National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration is open to everyone in the community and will include an Indigenous ceremony, food, music, jingle dancing, Algonquin craft making, Inuit games and more.

There are four Cooling Centres within the Municipality for residents to take advantage of to beat the heat during this week’s extreme heat event.

  • John Levi Community Centre (182 Bridge Street, Almonte)

  • Stewart Community Centre (112 MacFarlane Street, Pakenham)

  • Almonte Branch of the Mississippi Mills Public Library (155 High Street)

  • Pakenham Branch of the Mississippi Mills Public Library (128 MacFarlane Street)
