The Mississippi Mills Fire Department reminds all residents that they must have an active 2025 burn permit before any type of burning, including; campfires, burn barrels, chimeneas and brush piles. No burning is permitted between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. from April 1st to October 31st.
Open-Air Fire Bylaw 17-35 prohibits burning within the Development Boundaries of the Ward of Almonte and the Village of Pakenham. The automated burn permit system will not issue a permit to those who reside in the Development Boundaries.
Eligible residents may obtain a FREE Burn Permit electronically by going online at mm.burnpermits.com, or by contacting the Fire Department and the Municipal Office during business hours. Residents are required to obtain a single permit that is active for one calendar year.
Permit holders must call to activate their Burn Permit before each burn activity. Permit activation must be completed by calling the Burn Permit Line at 613-706-4004.
If you are having difficulty activating your permit, ensure your Permit is valid for 2025.
Enforcement actions may be taken against anyone who burns in violation of the By-law.

Get to know your burn status levels
The Mississippi Mills Fire Department, in close coordination with provincial and municipal partners, analyses various factors—such as the level of risk of fires getting out of control and the availability of resources—to determine burn status levels.
Level 1 - Low Risk: "Conditions are optimal for burning."
This means that there is a low risk of fires getting out of control: grounds are wet, air is moist, etc.
Level 2 - Moderate Risk: "Conditions are suitable for burns but please use caution due to dry conditions."
This means that there is some risk of damage due to fires, especially due to carelessness. Pay attention to your environment and monitor your burn—grass may catch fire and spread, winds may pick up embers, and ash may stay warm for hours and possibly reignite.
Level 3 - High Risk: "High risk for burning, use caution due to dry conditions. Have extinguishing agents readily available."
This means that fires may quickly spread unintentionally due to dry conditions. Those burning should have extinguishing agents (buckets of water, sand, fire extinguishers, etc.) ready in case the fire spreads.
Level 4 - Extreme Risk: "Only supervised campfires. Have extinguishing agents readily available."
This means the risk of a burn becoming incontrollable is too great to allow for fires other than small recreational fires. No burn barrels or brush fires, or the burning of yard waste. Prolonged and/or forecasted dry conditions have turned most of the environment highly flammable. The fire department risks thinning out their resources if they are tied up responding to multiple fires.
Level 5 - Total Burn Ban: "No burning no matter what due to dry and dangerous conditions."
At this point, any fire is far too great of a risk. Water availability may be low. The fire department is on high alert to ensure fires are controlled quickly. The occasional rain may not be enough to restore the environment from its dry conditions.
