Collage featuring three different kinds of wood slice art

From Royal Canadian Legion Branch 240 President Rob Madore

As many are aware, as part of the current Cenotaph renovations, the large tree beside the Cenotaph had to be removed due to its failing condition becoming a safety hazard.

Although this was unavoidable, the team behind the Cenotaph renovations were determined to find some type of reuse for any salvageable wood. The Almonte District High School woodworking shop has been given a large piece to do something creative with in the future.

We have also taken two other larger pieces and sawed them into 3” thick cookies, approximately 24” in diameter, to make them a more manageable size. We will have six of these cookies available for creators.

Our hope is to see the creative spirit that is alive and well in Almonte, take these wood cookies from what was a special tree, and make them into some creative artwork. Perhaps it’s a Legion-themed creation or maybe something in dedication to Almonte’s history or some type of commemoration to our Veterans. Our hope is also to see some, or all, of the finished pieces donated back to the Legion to be put on permanent display at various places around town.

Any interested creators, please email almontecenotaph@outlook.com with a brief description of what you intend to create with one of these pieces. We will be accepting submissions until May 20, after which the cookies will be distributed.
