Hazardous Conditions on and around Lakes, Rivers, Streams, and Ponds:

Due to unusually mild weather and increased interest from citizens to get outside to exercise on public lands during the COVID pandemic, the Mississippi Mills Fire Department (MMFD) reminds residents to stay off of lakes, rivers, and ponds as the ice may not be safe.

Many people are enjoying the outdoors this year with activities on the Mississippi River that include walking, snowshoeing, skiing and photographing nature.  These activities have created an unusual number of complaints to the municipality due to the risks being observed.  MMFD reminds all nature seekers to be extremely cautious when outside. Even if the weather has been cold, other factors such as water flow, fluctuating water levels, and snow on the ice can contribute to unsafe conditions.

Ice is never 100% safe. Please STAY OFF rivers, streams, and ponds. Conditions are not being monitored and ice may be unsafe.  Do not put yourself and others at risk.
