An emergency meeting of Council was held this morning. The meeting was to inform Council of significant structural issues with the building located at 38 Main Street East (Dungarvon Building) in Almonte.

An assessment by engineers requires immediate action be taken. Options are: Close the road to one lane of traffic, complete required structural repairs or demolish the belltower. At this time, no decisions or orders have been made. Note, like all building matters, this is a decision of the Chief Building Official (CBO). Council cannot direct or influence the CBO or building matters.

The Municipality will be taking steps to ensure the safety of residents in the building, as well as the public.

The immediate next step is that our CBO will be working with structural engineers and heritage architects to understand options and determine the best path forward. Again, at this time, no decision has been made.

The Heritage Advisory Committee has also been made aware of this development.
