STATEMENT FROM THE MAYOR
WINTER STORM WARNING: PLAN & PREPARE

December 22, 2022

Mississippi Mills is currently under a Winter Storm Warning with the potential for extreme weather to sweep across the area beginning this evening. According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, we should be prepared to experience heavy snow, rain, freezing rain, ice pellets, wind gusts and blowing snow.  Environment and Climate Change Canada recommends postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

In anticipation of the storm, our Municipal Emergency Control Group is monitoring the forecast and is prepared to respond as required.  Public Works staff are ready to carry out winter operations for snow and ice.   A reminder to residents and their guests that on-street parking is not permitted overnight; please leave the streets clear for the Public Works crew.

Updates such as impacts to services will be posted on the website, the municipal newsfeed and on the municipal Facebook page.   In the event of an emergency or extended power outage, municipal updates are provided on Lake 88, Oldies 107.7 and Valley Heritage Radio

As we head into the holiday weekend, I encourage you and your loved ones to consider alternate plans, as travel conditions may become hazardous.  If you do need to travel, please give yourself lots of extra time and proceed cautiously as roads and sidewalks may be icy.

In case of power outages, make sure your 72-hour emergency kit is stocked, devices are charged, flashlights have working batteries and you have access to a battery-powered radio.  For more tips on how to get prepared, visit https://www.getprepared.gc.ca/index-en.aspx

Let’s all plan ahead and be prepared for whatever this winter storm brings!

Wishing everyone a safe holiday!

Mayor Christa Lowry
Municipality of Mississippi Mills
