The Municipality of Mississippi Mills is teaming up with Home Hospice North Lanark (HHNL) as part of their annual tree fundraiser by launching an official Bicentennial tree.

The “Autumn Blaze Maple” is a hybrid of the red maple and the silver maple, both native to North America. They mature quickly and can grow as much as two feet per year under the right conditions. A limited number are available for purchase through the HHNL’s website, https://trees.hhnl.ca/.

“This wonderful initiative is two-fold: it’s a great Christmas gift idea that’s environmentally friendly, and it also supports the important work by Home Hospice North Lanark,” said Mississippi Mills Mayor Christa Lowry. “We’re really excited to be celebrating our municipality’s 200th anniversary next year and having an official bicentennial tree adds to the growing list of events, activities and features we have to look forward to,” she added.

The bareroot trees will be available for pick up at Reid’s Garden Centre in April 2023. Purchasers will also receive one, 30 litre bag of three-way planting mix and a 4.5-gram packet of Root Rescue. Anyone wishing to volunteer for tree distribution next spring can email trees@hhnl.ca.

“We are so proud of our tree fundraiser, which started in 1999 and was spearheaded by community builder Al Potvin,” said HHNL Tree Fundraiser Lead Peggy McPhail. “We are able to offer the trees and shrubs at great prices, and every dollar we raise makes a very real difference in the lives of your friends and neighbours when they are at their most vulnerable. We are 100% funded through donations and fundraising, so this is a very important endeavour.”

The Annual Tree Fundraiser shopping site is now live, and those looking to purchase a tree are encouraged to do so quickly as they are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
