More than 40 firefighters from Mississippi Mills, Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley, North Algona, Perth, Rideau Lakes, Russell and South Frontenac recently received grain entrapment rescue training, which will enable them to respond more effectively to emergencies involving grain bins, silos, trailers and buggies. The training was conducted by instructors from the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA).

Grain entrapment is a serious and often fatal hazard faced by workers in the agricultural industry, and firefighters need specialized training to respond. Now, they will be better equipped to handle grain entrapment emergencies and to provide vital assistance to the agricultural community.

“We live in an active farming community, and it is crucial that our firefighters have the skills and knowledge to respond to emergencies in the agricultural sector. The grain entrapment rescue training will provide our firefighters with the expertise they need to keep our community safe,” said Mayor of Mississippi Mills Christa Lowry.

“The safety of our community is our top priority, and this training will help us to better serve and protect our residents. We are grateful to CASA, Grain Farmers of Ontario, Ontario Federation of Agriculture, Lanark Federation of Agriculture, Cochran Seeds Almonte, Sheila James and Mississippi Mills Council for their support and sponsorship to make the training happen. Also, a big thanks to Munro Electric and their electricians Curtis Munro and JF Garneau who got us back up and running after an electrical malfunction,” said Fire Chief and Director of Protective Services Mike Williams.

“BeGrainSafe” included instruction in a mobile training and demonstration unit that allows firefighters to have practical, hands-on experience in grain extraction processes.

This training will undoubtedly benefit Mississippi Mills, particularly the agricultural community, by improving the response time and effectiveness of the rescue in grain entrapment emergencies.
