Highlights of the June 15, 2021 Council Meeting

 Council proclaimed the month of June as “Deafblind Awareness Month”. Deafblind Awareness Month recognizes and celebrates the contributions that deafblind individuals make in their communities throughout Ontario with the support of Intervenors who serve as a bridge to communication for individuals who are deafblind.

 Council declared the week of June 21st to 25th as Graduation Week to celebrate the achievements of students in Mississippi Mills. In a year where students faced challenges unlike any before, “The beautiful thing about learning is that no one can take it away from you.” (B.B. King). Congratulations to all 2021 graduates in Mississippi Mills!

 Mississippi Mills All My Relations presents via Zoom: TREATIES ARE ALIVE! on June 21st from 7-9:00p.m. Elder Larry McDermott, Algonquin from Shabot Obaadjiwan and Executive Director of Plenty Canada, will describe the Treaty Relationship between Canadians and Indigenous Peoples beginning with the Treaty of Niagara, 1764. Mayor Lowry will moderate the discussion, providing opportunity for questions from participants.  Council has entered into an agreement with Ottawa River Power Corporation to provide the hydro services and street lighting to Phase 3 of the Mississippi Mills Business Park in the amount of $115,074.00 plus HST.

Council approved the 2% increase on the 2020 budget allocations in the cost sharing agreement for recreation and pool services as proposed by the Town of Carleton Place for 2021.

 Additionally, Council approved a two-part payment arrangement for library services recommended by the Mississippi Mills Public Library Board that included a 2% increase on the 2020 budget allocations in the cost sharing agreement to cover the period from January 1, 2021 to September 30, 2021. In addition, Council approved a plan by the Mississippi Mills Public Library Board to reimburse south Ramsay residents for non-resident library fees charged by the Carleton Place Public Library Board effective October 1, 2021.  

 The Mississippi Mills municipal office at 3131 Old Perth Road is now open to the public for payments and by scheduled appointments only. Only one (1) person is permitted at the front desk at a time and all members of the public are required to wear a face mask while in the building. Staff will continue to check emails and voice messages regularly to continue to serve residents; please allow additional time for a response. Water samples can be dropped off at the Almonte Library branch. Payments and documents can continue to be dropped off in our secure drop box/safe at the back of the municipal office.
