Honour and Hope

Tomorrow, March 31st , is a sombre anniversary marking one year since we learned of the first local death attributed to Covid-19.   Flags at all municipal facilities will be lowered to half-mast tomorrow to honour the parents and grandparents, sisters and brothers, friends and neighbours we have lost to the pandemic. We encourage residents to take time to honour those we have lost, and those who grieve these losses.

This crisis is not over, and many are growing weary. As a result of the pandemic, everything we do is different now: how we interact with friends, family and colleagues, how we go about day to day tasks, how we celebrate and how we grieve. While practicing social distancing has saved countless lives, it has also created intense feelings of isolation and loneliness.    It is important to remain hopeful and remember we are not alone. There is a long stretch ahead yet, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and there is hope.

At 6:15pm on March 31st, some of our community’s churches will ring their bells twelve times - one for each month we’ve come through since the pandemic began. Please join us by stepping out of your homes and making sounds to respect and honour those who have passed and to remind your neighbours that we are here, still offering hope to one another.

Be safe, be well, and stay strong.
