Highlights of the May 9th, 2023
Council Meeting

Council heard a delegation from Laurie Reilly of the Salvation Army who highlighted the organization’s programs and services which includes continued community support through the Christmas Kettle, food hampers and sunshine bags to name a few. For more information, visit www.salvationarmy.ca.

Council approved supporting the efforts of A Meal For All by providing $2,000 in seed money. A Meal For Fall is a new initiative in Almonte that focuses on the importance of programs that support community building and offer access to food.

Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding between Mississippi Mills and Lanark County for an Affordable Housing Grant Program.  

Council welcomed Kathy Davis to the Municipality as the Director of Corporate Support Services, Treasurer and Deputy CAO. Kathy previously worked as the Executive Director with Family and Children’s Service of Renfrew County and as the Director of Corporate Support Services with Family Youth and Child Service of Muskoka. She holds a BA in Administration and Commercial Studies, as well as her CPA, CGA and CHRL designations.

The Committee of the Whole received a quarterly update from Childcare Services and Protective Services.  

Committee of the Whole also heard the following items, which will be brought forward for approval at a future Council meeting:

  • Procedural By-law Draft #1 containing 15 recommended motions. As part of the Governance Review report, Council directed staff to review the existing Procedural Bylaw and bring forward recommended changes for consideration.

Bicentennial Events:

  • POSTPONED to August 4- RCMP Musical Ride at the Almonte Fairgrounds.

  • May 27 - 'The Story of Almonte' Part 1 - documentary film by Rob & Sharon Newton. Stop by the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum at 2pm to view part 1 of this documentary with a special introduction by Rob & Sharon Newton. Donations to the food bank will be accepted.

  • June 16 - Mill Workers' Walk Re-enactment - all are welcome to join in this historical walk re-enacting a century of mill workers in Almonte going to work at the mills.

  • June 24 - Almonte Home & Garden Tour - 10am - 5pm. Put on by the Almonte General Hospital Fairview Manor Foundation and the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum

  • June 30 - Pakenham Canada Day Eve Parade and Fireworks

  • July 1 - Canada Day Celebration at Gemmill Park in Almonte. Lots of activities are being planned for this Bicentennial Canada Day celebration!
