At last night’s meeting, Council approved $178,762.40 in funding for projects related to Community Safety and Well-being (CSWB). These projects centre around four themes chosen by Council – Youth, Seniors, Transportation and Community Connections. These initiatives provide concrete action toward the goal of providing a community where Mississippi Mills residents of all ages feel welcome, safe and have the opportunity to thrive.

Some projects include:

  • Creation of a CSWB Grant Program – $50,000

  • Traffic calming measures – $72,000

  • Reach Out to Your Neighbour Community Campaign – $9,500

  • Mississippi Mills Shuttle Pilot – $5,000

  • Emergency Response Kits (in partnership with Age-Friendly North Lanark – $5,000

  • Pedestrian Safety Campaigns – $5,000

  • Updates to 211 (in partnership with Bridging Generations) – $4,500

Council fully supported a Notice of Motion from Mayor Christa Lowry regarding modular homes. The Motion directs staff to define and clarify zoning provisions for modular homes and amend fee schedules to allow for equitable building fees for certified modular homes. Staff will also identify challenges or barriers in existing provincial planning policies and the Ontario Building Code that could limit local implementation of modular homes as an option to increase attainable housing stock.

Council endorsed the Terms of Reference and Procedural By-law for the new Lanark County Police Services Board.

Committee of the Whole also heard the following items, which will be brought forward for approval at a future Council meeting:

  • The quarterly report was received for the Project Management Office.  

  • The Council Remuneration review, which amends per diem and meal allowance rates to be in line with Lanark County.

  • A Zoning By-law Amendment for 6443 Martin Street North, which seeks to amend zoning to permit a single detached dwelling on the lot.

  • The initiation of project framework for Official Plan Amendment 28 – Rural Villages and Rural Vitality. This project will assess the current conditions, needs, opportunities and constraints of the rural villages of Appleton, Blakeney, Clayton and Pakenham.
