Council

Council began with the Annual Land Acknowledgement Ceremony. Algonquin ElderLarry McDermott from the Shabot Obaadjiwan First Nation was invited to address Council. Respecting Indigenous protocol, Mayor Lowry offered tobacco to Elder McDermott in request for the smudging ceremony and for his guidance to Council. Elder McDermott presided over a sacred ceremony which included smudging before Mayor Lowry officially acknowledged the traditional unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabe Nation. In his address, Elder McDermott provided history of Indigenous relations, and working together to address the commitment to future generations. Mayor Lowry thanked Elder McDermott for sharing his knowledge with Council and for his friendship. The Land Acknowledgement Statement is attached to the highlights.  Council held a public meeting to hear statements regarding the proposed plan of subdivision for the Mill Valley Active Adult Community located at East 1/2 Lot 14 Concession 10 Ramsay. Two written submissions have been received and will be included in the public record, a representative for the applicant made a presentation and one member of the public spoke. Those wishing to submit comments or receive more information about the plan of subdivision should contact Senior Planner Melanie Knight at mknight@mississippimills.ca

 In response to a delegation and petition received by the Davison Crescent Road Association and acknowledging previous agreements dating back to preamalagamation, Council approved to continue providing winter operation services to Davison Crescent in the amount of $3,500 until May 1, 2022. This will be the final extension of the agreement.

In recognition of the hard work and commitment that many volunteers and organizations provide to the community, Council offers annual Community Grants to qualifying organizations. The following organizations have received funding for 2022:

  • Pakenham Civitan Club $2000
  • All My Relations $3500
  • Almonte Legion Pipe Band $3500
  • Almonte in Concert $2500
  • Mississippi Lakes Association $500
  • Puppets Up 2022 $5000
  • North Lanark Agricultural Society $5000
  • Almonte Celtfest $5000
  • Pride Mississippi Mills $3450
  • Folkus Concert Series $2500

At the upcoming February 1, 2022 Committee of the Whole meeting, Members of Council will have further discussions on the draft 2022 budget. This will include further consideration of items that were on last night’s Council and Committee of the Whole agendas. This includes: MRPC and 28 Mill St. fund allocation, the road options report, and the long term debt, reserve and budget considerations report.

The following items were heard by the Committee of the Whole and will be brought forward at an upcoming Council meeting for final approval:

  • Recruitment, Selection and Hiring Policy Updates
  • Long Term Disability Premiums

 

The municipal office at 3131 Old Perth Road is only open to the public for payments and for scheduled appointments only. Only one (1) person is permitted at the front desk at a time, and all members of the public are required to wear a face mask while in the building. Staff will continue to check emails and voice messages regularly to continue to serve residents; please allow additional time for a response. Water samples can be dropped off at the Almonte Library branch. Payments and documents can continue to be dropped off in our secure dropbox/safe at the back of the municipal office.
