Highlights of the December 21st 2021, Council Meeting

During the last Council meeting of the year, Mayor Lowry gave the 2021 Annual Mayoral Address. The address acknowledged how proud she was of the Mississippi Mills Community for how they have faced and persevered throughout another year of the COVID19 pandemic. She thanked staff, frontline and essential workers, and support organizations for their continued commitment through the year. The Mayor also highlighted the many accomplishments throughout the Municipality including:

  • Completion of the final phase of the Business Park.
  • Completed the Official Plan Amendment 22.
  • $3,000,000 potable water strorage facility.
  • Levi Bridge upgrade and replacement.
  • Ten additional movies were filmed in Mississippi Mills.
  • On the path of Truth and Reconcilialtion;
    • Mississippi Mills flew the every child Matter Flag for September.
    • Passed a motion to wave administrative fees for commissioning documents for residential school survivors.
    • Created an Indigenous Bicentinial working group.
    • Held a candlelight vigil with All my Relations to recognize the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.

 Looking forward to 2022,

  • The commencing the Downtown Revitalization Infrastructure project.
  • The Digital Master Plan.
  • The Community Services Strategic Plan.
  • Completing the Land Evaluation Area Review (LEAR).
  • The continued planning of the Bicentennial Celebration in 2023.

 The 2021 Service Awards recognized five staff members for their continued support and commitment to the municipality. Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication! Staff members recognized include: Sheila Vagner, Chris Latham, Richard Potter, Amanda Smith and Roxanne Sweeney

Council passed pre budgetary approval for the following items ahead of the 2022 Budget approval so staff can proceed with the projects:

  • $26,000 for a new furnace for the daycare center.
  • $6,686,200 for the downtown core renewal project.

 Council also passed the 2022 Fees and Charges By-law, to allow for changes and updates to be effective for January 2022.

 The following items were heard by the Committee of the Whole and will be brought forward at an upcoming Council meeting for final approval:

  • John Levi Community Centre – Staff brought forward a report asking Council to approve the renaming of the Almonte Community Centre to the John Levi Community Cenre in recognition of all his contributions to Mississippi Mills. The Levi family was in attendance at the meeting, where the expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the honour. 
  • Council Approval for hiring three postions (Deputy Treasurer, Director of Protective Services, and Communications Assistant.)
  • Award of Tender for the Renewal of the Downtown Core.

 The municipal office at 3131 Old Perth Road is open to the public for payments and for scheduled appointments only. Only one (1) person is permitted at the front desk at a time, and all members of the public are required to wear a face mask while in the building. Staff will continue to check emails and voice messages regularly to continue to serve residents; please allow additional time for a response. Water samples can be dropped off at the Almonte Library branch. Payments and documents can continue to be dropped off in our secure dropbox/safe at the back of the municipal office.
