Additional Residential Units

Additional Residential Units (ARUs) are self-contained living spaces that can be added to your home or property—like basement apartments or backyard suites. They offer flexible housing for families, rental income opportunities, and help create affordable housing while using existing infrastructure efficiently.

To help property owners build ARUs, the Municipality has developed guides specific to your contextual location; urban or rural. These guides cover topics such as:

• What ARUs are and their benefits;
• The number of ARUs allowed on a property;
• Where an ARU can be built;
• Zoning, size, parking and permit requirements; and
• Frequently asked questions.

These guides were made possible thanks to the Housing Accelerator Fund, and are intended to make ARUs more accessible for residents.
