Lanark County Seedy Saturday in Almonte – March 15, 2025
From Indian Creek Orchard Gardens
The 2024 Lanark County Seedy Saturday was such a huge success, we have decided to do it again in 2025.
Join us as we kick off the 2025 gardening season in style on Saturday, March 15 from 10 am to 3 pm at the Almonte Civitan Club. This event includes guest speakers, movies, workshops, lectures, a master gardener advice table, seed libraries, seed swap table, horticultural societies, seed vendors, nurseries, compost suppliers, and so much more!
You will walk out feeling prepared, empowered and passionate about the upcoming gardening season.
All door proceeds go to support the Lanark County Interval House and Community Support, a shelter for women and children fleeing domestic abuse. Last year, we raised over $1,700.
The schedule
10:30 am: Edible Landscapes, Planning Your Food Forest
Join Scott Sigurdson of Indian Creek Orchard Gardens as he shares his experience in edible landscaping. He will talk about; how to get the most from your landscape, what works and what does not, the many layers of a food forest, how to design for resilience, avoiding the many pitfalls for the unwary. Plus, a Q&A session.
10:45 am: Making your own vermicompost with Geraldine Baker, aka The Worm Lady
Have fun discovering how tiny red wigglers will work for you making nutrient rich soil from raw food waste and all carbon based materials. This demonstration will show how to establish and maintain a habitat and harvest castings to fertilize indoor plants and gardens. Tips and Q&A for successful composting indoors and outside.
11:45 am: Growing Edible Mushroom at home
Join Barrie Brodie of Forest Floor Mushrooms as he delivers his workshop on the mushroom propagation. He will cover many methods including starting from a kit, using plug spawn and will also touch on more advanced growing techniques. Last year he filled our workshop room to overflowing, so we have moved him to the auditorium.
Noon: Soil blocking a cost effective and fun alternative to using growing containers with Matthew Bearsley of Castlegarth Farm
1 pm: Movie – ‘In my Backyard’
‘In My Backyard’ chronicles director Jamie Day Fleck’s personal journey into urban agriculture, converting her entire backyard into a kitchen garden. Using her personal story as a jumping-off point, she branches out to look at the various solutions that backyard gardeners and urban growers have dreamed up and implemented in her city — Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
By looking at the stories of individuals that are changing their communities through local food production, it becomes evident that positive changes are being implemented and solutions are available. To many people global environmental problems seem insurmountable but a few people are working diligently to create new paradigms and show bright possibilities within urban spaces.
