Council Highlights – May 5, 2026

Last night’s Council meeting began with a public meeting about a zoning change for 3122 11th Concession Pakenham. The change would stop any new homes from being built on the farmland, so it stays used for farming. A by-law to pass the zoning amendment will be brought forward to an upcoming Council meeting.
Council approved Part A of the Mississippi Mills Climate Action Plan. In 2024, Council asked staff to join the Partners for Climate Protection program and start creating a climate action plan. Part A includes the results of the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory and an explanation of where improvements can be made. The study showed most energy use comes from municipal buildings and the wastewater treatment plant. There are ways to save energy and switch from high-demand systems to lower-carbon options when possible. Council also told staff to move ahead with Part B of the plan. This part will set GHG emissions reduction targets, carry out community consultation, create actions to meet the targets and plans on how each action should be carried out. The final plan will guide the work needed to reduce GHG emissions.
Council declared May as Jewish Heritage Month in the Municipality. This recognizes the important contributions of the Jewish community to our local area and to Canada, including in business, politics, arts, science and medicine. It also recognizes the long history of antisemitism, which continues to rise and often targets Jewish people, schools, synagogues, homes and businesses. The Municipality of Mississippi Mills rejects all forms of hate and is committed to being a peaceful and inclusive place for everyone. During the meeting, Council also supported a similar resolution from Lanark County Council that promotes a safe and welcoming environment for all residents, regardless of faith, ethnicity or background.
Committee of the Whole also discussed the following items, which will be brought forward for approval at a future Council meeting:
- The draft Roads and Public Works Service Delivery Review and approval to proceed with a gravel road review and gravel road needs study. Council also asked the Roads and Public Works Director, HR Business Partner and CAO to optimize staffing when considering key projects and operation needs.
- The recommendation report for a one-year pilot project for a building permit fee dispute process.
- A Notice of Motion from Councillor Denzil Ferguson asking for a review of the municipal sign by-law, specifically the rules about digital signs.
- Quarterly reports from Roads and Public Works and Development Services and Engineering.

- Hybrid Council Meeting – Tuesday, June 9, 2026, 6 p.m. Committee of the Whole to follow Council.
