Did you know that vision disabilities affect how clearly a person can see? Very few people are completely blind. Many experience limited vision—such as reduced peripheral or central vision—while others may only see shapes, outlines, or light direction.

Tips to support people who are blind or have low vision:

  • Identify yourself when you approach someone. Speak clearly, and don’t walk away without letting them know.
  • If you offer assistance, wait for permission first, then offer your arm and walk at a comfortable pace.
  • Avoid touching or distracting service animals—they’re working and must stay focused.

Tips for businesses:

  • Offer to read printed materials aloud (menus, service costs, forms, etc.).
  • Clearly communicate that service animals are welcome in your establishment.
  • If you need to step away, don’t leave the customer standing in the middle of a space—guide them to a safe, comfortable spot.
  • Use planters or visual markers near uneven steps to help signal changes in elevation that could pose a hazard.
