It's National AccessAbility Week (May 31 to June 6, 2026) – a time to highlight the importance of accessibility, inclusion and equal participation for everyone. Throughout the week, we’ll be sharing practical tips and information to help create more accessible spaces for all.

Did you know that physical disabilities can include a wide range of functional limitations – from mild challenges with movement or coordination to muscle weakness, tremors or paralysis?

Tips for supporting people with physical disabilities:

  • Always ask before offering help – many people have their own preferred way of doing things.
  • Wheelchairs, scooters and mobility devices are part of a person’s personal space. Avoid touching, moving or leaning on them without permission.

Tips for businesses:

  • Keep ramps, hallways and pathways clear. Remove clutter and rearrange furniture or shelving to ensure easy movement.
  • Provide accessible seating, especially with arms, for individuals who may not be able to stand or wait for long periods.
  • If you’re having a longer conversation with someone using a wheelchair or scooter, consider sitting so you can speak at eye level.

Let’s work together to promote equal access and full participation for individuals with disabilities. This week, we celebrate the resilience, achievements and contributions of people who navigate barriers every day.
