Mill of Kintail
Mill of Kintail

Step inside the historic gristmill turned museum at the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area and learn about two local historical figures who made significant impacts on the international stage; Dr. Robert Tait McKenzie was a physician, educator, sculptor, athlete and soldier. Dr. James Naismith, while a physical educator and physician himself, is perhaps best known for inventing the sport of basketball. The museum contains pictures and artifacts from Naismith's past and a brilliantly laid-out story about his life. The museum also contains the very rock of which Naismith played his childhood game "Duck on a Rock"- the game that set the foundation for the rules of basketball.

The Mill of Kintail is one of the Seven Wonders of Lanark County and hosts a variety of events and activities throughout the year. Walk the gorgeous trails on the 152 acres of land, visit the museum and immerse yourself in history and beauty! This museum cannot be missed!

MVTM
Mississippi Valley Textile Museum

The Mississippi Valley Textile Museum is located in Almonte, on the 'island'. Stop by and step back in time to how life was once lived, here in the heart, of the once booming textile industry. And discover why Mississippi Mills was once referred to as 'Manchester of the North'.

The museum explores the history of the woolen textile industry in the Mississippi River Valley, and the effects it had on the social, cultural and industrial development of the region. They also have exhibits, offer education on fibre arts and are a centre for the study of industrial textiles. They take pride in preserving the historic building in which the museum is located along with the exquisite artifacts it preserves.

North Lanark Regional Museum
North Lanark Regional Museum

The North Lanark Historical Society was established in 1965 by local people interested in preserving the history of Almonte and the townships of Beckwith, Lanark, Pakenham, and Ramsay. At the time, they were the only group in the area that was dedicated to collecting artefacts and information on the history of the North Lanark region and transcribing original archival documents.

Today, you can visit the North Lanark Regional Museum located at 647 River Rd. in Appleton. Their mandate is to preserve the heritage, artefacts, culture, and history of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills and area, and to keep it readily accessible to the public.
