August 27, 2025

As students get ready to head back to school next Wednesday, there’s a familiar mix of excitement and anticipation in the air.  For many in our community, this moment is also heavy with emotion this year.

We continue to grieve the community’s tragic loss in June. I acknowledge the deep impact this has had on families, schoolmates, friends and neighbours. Although we move forward, we carry that heavy loss with us.

Over the summer, the municipal engineering team looked at options to improve safety in that area, given the slope of the street, drainage issues and property line challenges. As a starting point before school starts, Roads and Public Works will be installing centre line bollards – 3 on Paterson and two on King Street – to help calm traffic and protect pedestrians.

I would like to acknowledge and thank all of those residents and local businesses who have provided thoughtful suggestions or offers of help. We’re staying closely connected with both school boards and the OPP to ensure any future steps the municipality takes are informed and closely aligned with our partners.

As our youngest citizens return to class, let’s come together with care and intention. Please slow down near school zones, watch for buses and crossings, and be extra mindful of the young lives around us.

Sincerely,

Mayor Christa Lowry
Municipality of Mississippi Mills
