About Dr. Sean Egan
Dr. Sean Egan was a Canadian-Irish professor of Human Kinetics, an endurance athlete, and a lifelong advocate for human potential and wellness. His life bridged academic excellence with extraordinary physical accomplishments and a strong sense of community.
Deeply committed to public health, Dr. Egan became a passionate advocate for children's health and wellness, focusing mainly on preventing childhood obesity. He firmly believed that early physical activity and play are vital in setting the foundation for lifelong well-being, and he worked tirelessly to promote this message to educators, families, and communities.
In 2005, at 63 years old, Dr. Egan set out to become the oldest Canadian and Irish-born climber to summit Mount Everest. Tragically, he passed away from a suspected heart attack at base camp while preparing for his final ascent.
Outside of academia and adventure, Dr. Egan deeply admired his hometown of Almonte, Ontario, where he and his wife, Mary, raised their children, Anna and Seamas. He cherished the town’s close-knit community and natural beauty. A dedicated supporter of local activities, Dr. Egan was especially fond of the white and green Almonte Soccer Club, sharing in the camaraderie and spirit of the game, which reflected his values of teamwork and perseverance.
About Walk This Way
Walk This Way is celebrating its 20th anniversary! This goal-oriented wellness program is hosted by BGC Ottawa, and targets inner city children and youth. The program, which runs each spring, consists of a series of weekly training walks, where participants have the opportunity to explore neighbourhoods, communities and landmarks they might never otherwise see.
The program, which launched in 2006, was inspired by the life work of Almonte resident and University of Ottawa professor, the late Dr Sean Egan. Dr Egan cautioned against the perils of poor diet, excessive screen time and sedentary living particularly in young people. Walk This Way aims to get kids moving, “one step at a time.”
