Press Release – Sivarulrasa Gallery

Vernissage/Artists Reception: Saturday February 14, 2 to 4 p.m.

From February 14 to March 20, Sivarulrasa Gallery is delighted to present LOVE LOVE LOVE in Galleries I and II. The show brings together works by artists Sarah Anderson, Gayle Kells, Peter Wood, and Mary Pfaff, exploring themes of love and life.

“To me, love is a big word and encompasses many things,” says artist Sarah Anderson. “It ebbs and flows. It cannot be controlled.”

Her works present a state of flux with intersecting and sometimes chaotic lines and shapes. The viewer is invited to feel all the complexities that come with having, being in, and losing love.

The drawings, paintings, and assemblages by artist Gayle Kells use the dress as a point of reference to explore themes of female identity and beauty.

“Corsets and undergarments have been part of a woman’s wardrobe for generations – reshaping, confining, and restraining the female form to conform to society’s ideal body,” she says.

Her assemblages “Black Night” and “Strapless” are part of an ongoing series that transforms female undergarments, embedding them with pins and other embellishments, reflecting the beauty and pain of the female experience.

The paintings by Peter Wood continue his long-standing engagement with folk art influences shaped by lived experience, place, feeling and observation.

“These works draw a line from my years on the South Shore of Nova Scotia to my current explorations of the Ottawa Valley,” he says. “They are moments of pause, brief respites of calm set against the relentless pace and endlessly repeating patterns of life.”

“Like art, love dissolves and intersects softly, intertwining our lives in ways that are both tender and profound,” says artist Mary Pfaff.

Her paintings are multi-layered and highly nuanced, using acrylic, watercolour, and fragments of rice paper. Through layered textures and delicate shifts in colour, the works encourage moments of quiet reflection.

Meet the artists at the Vernissage/Artists Reception on Saturday, February 14 from 2 to 4 p.m.
