Flags at all municipal facilities in Mississippi Mills have been lowered today, Thursday, April 9, 2026, to mark the National Day of Remembrance of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

On Easter Monday in 1917, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together for the first time. Advancing uphill through sleet, mud, and relentless shellfire, Canadian soldiers engaged in a grueling four‑day battle that resulted in one of the most significant victories of the First World War.

The capture of Vimy Ridge was a defining moment in Canada’s history, but it came at a tremendous cost. Of the approximately 100,000 Canadians who served at Vimy—at a time when the nation’s population was only eight million—more than 10,000 were killed or wounded. These losses include families and loved ones from our own community.

In 2003, the Government of Canada designated April 9 as Vimy Ridge Day, a time to honour the thousands of Canadians who served and the many who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Today, we remember their courage, their service, and the enduring legacy they left for our country.
