Environment Canada Issues Snowfall Warning – January 14, 2026

Environment Canada has issued a yellow warning for significant snowfall beginning this evening.

Snowfall accumulation could reach be between 15 to 25 cm with reduced visibility and local blowing snow.

Snow will begin tonight, along with a sharp drop in temperature, and last into Thursday evening, with snow tapering off Thursday night.

OPP East Region advises those who have to be on the road late this evening and tomorrow to be prepared:

  • Top up your fuel and washer fluid
  • Have an emergency kit in your vehicle
  • Give yourself extra time
  • Clear all the snow from your vehicle (including headlights and taillights)
  • Keep headlights turned on
  • Slow down and leave extra following distance

Winter parking restrictions in effect

Winter parking restrictions are in effect to help keep roads clear and safe.

On highways:

  • Do not park or leave your vehicle where snow removal signs are posted.
  • Parking is also prohibited if you’ve been notified by the Municipality.

During a snow event:

  • No parking on highways or in municipal lots between 1:30 a.m. to 7 a.m.
  • Restrictions apply from April 1 – November 30 whenever snow or freezing rain is forecasted.
  • They remain in place for 4 days after snowfall if accumulation occurs.

This warning is part of Environment Canada’s new colour-coded weather alert system:

Yellow

  • Hazardous weather may cause damage, disruption or health impacts
  • Impacts are moderate, localized and/or short-term
  • Yellow alerts are the most common

Orange

  • Severe weather is likely to cause significant damage, disruption or health impacts
  • Impacts are major, widespread and/or may last a few days
  • Orange alerts are uncommon

Red

  • Very dangerous and possibly life-threatening weather will cause extreme damage and disruption
  • Impacts are extensive, widespread, and prolonged
  • Red alerts are rare
