‘Three Generations’ Exhibition Coming to Mississippi Valley Textile Museum on October 17
Press Release – Mississippi Valley Textile Museum
A new exhibition is coming to the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum in October! Attend the vernissage for “Three Generations” by Judy Nakagawa on Saturday, October 17 at 1pm. This exhibition will be on display until December 20, 2026.
Opening Performance – Passages: Life as a Pilgrimage (Adapted)
Passages: Life as a Pilgrimage is a dance project by Takako Segawa inspired by the pilgrimages she made with her great grandmother to the 88 Shrines in Shikoku, Japan. This work will be accompanied by the vocal renderings of opera singer Noriko Hashimoto as both a singer and dance performer. The entire production has been set to the original music composed by Nick Schofield of Gatineau.
Three Generations is an exhibition of works by Judy Nakagawa of Ottawa. This exhibition showcases the story of three generations of Nakagawa’s Japanese Canadian family, from her grandparents’ arrival to Canada, her parents’ experience during World War II, and her experience living in the present day.
“Working with the sculptural form, I use a variety of fibers, including fabrics, wires, handmade paper and bamboo to tell my story and the story of my family over three generations. In many ways, the fibers are a metaphor for how families are held together – they’re woven together to cloak us; pressed into the paper we use for documents and readings; and knotted, tied, twisted and otherwise manipulated to connect us to each other and to the world,” said Judy Nakagawa.
“I look forward to the transformation of our gallery with Judy’s installation that takes us through her poignant journey of generations of her family,” added Michael Rikley-Lancaster, Executive Director/Curator, Mississippi Valley Textile Museum.
