Warmer temperatures and dry grass conditions mean grass fire season is now underway in Mississippi Mills. Due to current conditions, the Mississippi Mills Fire Department (MMFD) has moved the burn status to Level 2 – Moderate.

Residents are reminded that brush, drum and windrow fires are restricted between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. under the Open Air Burning By-law 17-35 and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry regulations.

An active 2026 burn permit is required before any type of open air burning.

If you plan to burn, please keep the following safety reminders in mind:

  • Activate your open-air burn permit before burning
  • Burn only during permitted hours and only approved materials
  • Avoid outdoor burning on windy days
  • Keep a water source nearby when burning brush or debris
  • Have hand tools such as shovels and rakes readily available
  • Follow the setback requirements of the Open-Air Burning By-law and choose a safe location away from building, trees and power lines
  • Keep burn piles small and manageable
  • Never leave a fire unattended
  • Fully extinguish the fire before leaving
  • Thoroughly soak the area after burning to prevent rekindling

Visit the Mississippi Mills Fire Department Burn Permit site to purchase your free permit or call the MMFD at 613-256-2064. Permit holders must call to active their burn permit before each burn activity.
