2026 National AccessAbility Week – Tip #4 – Assisting People with Mental Health Disabilities

Did you know that mental health disabilities include a wide range of conditions, such as anxiety disorders, mood disorders, and behavioural disorders? People may express these disabilities in different ways – some may appear tense or irritable, have difficulty making decisions, or react emotionally in ways that seem unexpected.
Tips to support people with mental health disabilities:
- Treat everyone with the same respect and consideration you would offer anyone else.
- If someone appears to be in crisis, ask how you can best support them.
- Respect personal space and allow the person time to process information or respond.
Tips for businesses:
- Maintain a calm, low‑distraction environment whenever possible. Loud noises, crowded spaces, and frequent interruptions can increase stress.
- Stay patient, calm, and courteous, even if someone’s behaviour seems unusual. Focus on understanding what they need and how you can help.
Join us in raising awareness about the importance of equal access and full participation for individuals with disabilities. Let’s recognize and celebrate the achievements of those who face barriers every day.
