2026 Community Awards Spotlight – Exceptional Volunteer Don Willey

Volunteers contribute to the vibrancy, diversity and strength of our community. This award is presented annually to exceptional volunteers whose contributions have made a meaningful and lasting difference in Mississippi Mills.
Affectionately known as Mr. Light Up the Night, Don Willey has lived and breathed this beloved Mississippi Mills holiday tradition for more than 30 years — even proudly advertising it on his truck. His dedication as chairperson is unmatched. Preparations for the next year’s show begin almost as soon as the previous one ends, and Don is at the centre of it all: hosting fundraisers, recruiting committee members, volunteers, and sponsors, organizing meetings, and ensuring every detail of the event comes together.
His passion is infectious. Don has kept Light Up the Night shining brightly through rising costs, unpredictable weather, volunteer shortages, and countless challenges. His enthusiasm draws people in, inspires them to help, and reminds us why this event remains such a cherished part of our community.
Don is, in every sense, a wonderful ambassador for Mississippi Mills.
Here’s what Don’s nominators had to say about him:
“What really stands out about Don is his enthusiasm. It’s contagious. He brings people together and makes everyone feel valued – from volunteers to sponsors to families attending. That spirit is a big part of why Light Up the Night remains such a meaningful community tradition.”
"As a business owner, I have seen firsthand the positive impact this event has on our downtown core. Each year, Light Up the Night brings thousands of visitors into Almonte for an evening of festive fun, community connection and celebration…Don’s leadership and dedication have created an event that strengthens community spirit, while also providing meaningful economic support to small businesses.”
“Don gives his time and energy freely and without recognition, and our community is stronger because of him. He is very deserving of this honour.”
Congratulations, Don!
