2026 Community Awards Spotlight – Exceptional Volunteer Bonnie McBain

Volunteers contribute to the vibrancy, diversity and strength of our community. This award is presented annually to exceptional volunteers whose contributions have made a meaningful and lasting difference in Mississippi Mills.

Bonnie McBain has always shown up for her community. As a young mom, she volunteered with her sons’ baseball and soccer teams, and today she continues to give generously of her time at Naismith Memorial Public School, where she helps children learn to read several times a week. Her support extends far beyond the classroom — she is a familiar and trusted presence at school events, fundraisers, and anywhere an extra set of hands is needed. Her willingness to step in, quietly and without hesitation, has made her invaluable to the school community.

Born a Naismith, Bonnie carries a deep sense of loyalty to her family’s name and heritage. She served on the Naismith Foundation for more than 20 years and has volunteered with the Puppets Up! International Puppet Festival, the Patient and Family Advisory Committee at the Almonte General Hospital, and the Run/Walk for Women’s and Newborn Health. Her care and dedication are truly admirable.

Bonnie has never sought recognition — she is the quiet helper in the background, always ready to support others, always giving more than she takes.

“She has a remarkable ability to connect with children, especially struggling readers, helping them build confidence and develop a genuine love for reading…The progress I have seen in students who work regularly with Bonnie is tremendous. Many children who once lacked confidence in their reading abilities have grown into enthusiastic and capable readers because of her encouragement and support.”

“Even when her cancer reappeared and impacted her own health, she remained determined to continue volunteering and supporting this community and hospital. She always answers the call when help is needed…”
