2026 Community Awards Spotlight – Business Champion Sanjeev Sivarulrasa

Born in Sri Lanka and trained in law, Sanjeev Sivarulrasa followed an unexpected but inspired path. His passion for astronomy and photography sparked a vision: to create a gallery that would showcase exceptional Canadian artists and bring contemporary art to a wider audience. Twelve years ago, he chose Almonte as the home for Sivarulrasa Gallery — a decision rooted in his immediate connection to the community.

The gallery first opened in the Thoburn Mill, but within five years it had outgrown the space. Sanjeev moved to its current location on Mill Street, where the gallery has become a cornerstone of the downtown experience. His legal and organizational expertise provides artists with a rare level of professional representation and protection, while his meticulous approach to curation elevates every exhibition. The gallery’s online presence is among the strongest in the country, promoting artists on both national and international stages.

Sivarulrasa Gallery stands out for its professionalism, its atmosphere, and its calibre — rivaling the sophistication of galleries in Toronto or Montreal. Yet it remains deeply rooted in Mississippi Mills, contributing significantly to the vitality of our downtown. Sanjeev’s business acumen has translated into meaningful community building: attracting visitors, supporting local commerce, and helping position Almonte as a cultural destination.
