Budget Spotlights 2026: How are my property taxes spent?
The 2026 Mississippi Mills Budget process is officially underway and we’re laying the groundwork for tomorrow with the theme: “Building Foundations for the Future.”
Starting this week, we’re once again launching our Budget Spotlight segments. These updates will give you a behind-the-scenes look at how municipal departments operate and the capital projects they’re planning for 2026. First up: A closer look at how your tax dollars are allocated.
Your property taxes are distributed across four key areas:
- 44% - Lower-tier municipal services
- 7% - Police Services
- 35% - Upper-tier county services
- 15% - School boards
The Municipality’s portion funds essential services that keep our community safe, vibrant and well-maintained, including:
- Fire services
- Libraries
- Parks maintenance
- Recreation programs
- Snow removal and winter maintenance
For every dollar spent by the Municipality in 2025:
- 37% came from property taxes
- 17% from user fees
- 14% from rate revenue (water, wastewater, stormwater)
- 4% from other revenues and penalties
- 9% from grants and subsidies
- 9% from reserves
- 10% from bank financing
Education
The educational portion of your taxes supports:
- Upper Canada District School Board
- Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario
- Conseil scolaire catholique de district Centre-Est
- Conseil des écoles publiques de l’Est
Investing in Our Future
The capital budget ensures strategic investment in infrastructure to meet current needs and support future growth. The top priority areas include:
- Roads and Public Works
