Statement from the Office of the Mayor – Pride Month

June 3, 2025

The Municipality of Mississippi Mills is proud to fly the Pride colours for Pride Month – a celebration of the history, courage and diversity of the Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and questioning, intersex, asexual and additional sexual orientations and gender identities (2SLGBTQIA+) communities.

At our May 27 meeting, Council once again unanimously proclaimed June as Pride Month. Members of Council participated in Pride in Mississippi Mills’ bench unveiling at the Appleton Village Park last week – the third Pride bench to be installed with two more to come! And this Sunday, June 8, I will join members of Pride in Mississippi Mills and Lanark County Wide Pride to raise the flag at the Mississippi Valley Textile Museum.

While Canada has some of the most advanced rights, freedoms and protection in the world, some members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities don’t feel safe, welcome or accepted. This is why, we must stand together and remain united as a community that’s inclusive and welcoming. All members of the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities belong, and are valued and respected in Mississippi Mills.

Pride Month reminds us that we all have a role to play in creating a world where everyone can live freely and authentically – as themselves. Thank you to those advocates and allies in our community who continually push for progress. You inspire hope and create meaningful change!

Flanked by two Progress Pride flags, the rainbow banner created in 2023 as part of our “What Does Pride Mean to You?” initiative will be showcased in the atrium of the municipal office, outside Council Chambers, for the entire month.

In the spirit of love and inclusivity, I encourage you to experience Pride Month in a way that feels right for you. Watch the Pride in Mississippi Mills and Queer Connection Lanark social media pages for ways to celebrate all month long!   You can also wear your Pride colours on your lapel – Pride buttons are available at the Almonte Old Town Hall.

“The bravest thing you can be is yourself.”

Sincerely,

Mayor Christa Lowry
