Municipal Cooling Centres Available During Multi-Day Heat Event

Blue, green and white graphic with municipal cooling centre hours

Environment Canada has the region under a multi-day heat event that is expected to continue into Tuesday evening or Wednesday.

This heat event will bring:

  • Daytime highs of 32-35 degrees Celsius, with humidex values of 37 to 42
  • Overnight lows of 20 to 23 degrees Celsius

A cooler air mass is expected to arrive Tuesday evening but there is a possibility hot and humid conditions could continue in eastern Ontario into Wednesday.

Risks

  • Conditions can also bring poor air quality
  • Watch for signs of heat exhaustion (headache, nausea, dizziness, thirst, dark urine, intense fatigue)
  • Watch for signs of heat stroke (red and hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion, change in consciousness)

Heat safety reminders

  • Drink water often and before you feel thirsty
  • Close blinds or shades and open windows if outside is cooler than inside
  • Turn on air conditioning, use a fan to move to a cooler area of your home
  • If your home is hot, move to a public cooling centre
  • Plan and schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day
  • Limit exposure to direct sun and heat – wear lightweight, light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing and wide-brimmed hat
  • Never leave people, especially children or pets, inside a parked vehicle
