Lanark County Paramedic Service Unveils New Crest During National Paramedic Services Week

As part of Paramedic Services Week (May 18–24), the Lanark County Paramedic Service (LCPS) has officially unveiled a new crest and refreshed visual identity — a powerful symbol of the Service’s 25-year journey from emergency responder to integrated, community-based healthcare provider.

Designed in collaboration with Perth-based artist Jaana Brett, the new crest captures the evolution of modern paramedicine while honouring LCPS’ deep connection to the communities it serves.

“This crest tells the story of who we are and how far we’ve come,” said LCPS Chief Travis Mellema. “Over the past 25 years, paramedicine has grown into a deeply respected, community-centred profession. This new visual identity reflects that evolution, and our continued commitment to serving the people of Lanark County with compassion, skill, and integrity.”

The crest incorporates several meaningful elements:

• The Star of Life, symbolizing the complete emergency care process
• A nine-point maple leaf, representing the nine municipalities LCPS serves
• The Rod of Asclepius, an emblem of healing and medical care
• Wings, evoking speed, urgency, and protection
• A wreath of maple leaves, signifying collaboration and wraparound care

The word “Paramedic” is now more prominently featured — a deliberate shift to honour the profession and move away from outdated terminology like “ambulance service.” Red and blue tones connect the crest to both Canada and Lanark County, while reinforcing themes of trust, professionalism, and service.

“Paramedics play a critical role in community health — far beyond what most people see,” said Brad Harrington, President & CEO of the Mississippi River Health Alliance (MRHA). “This new crest honours that evolution and reaffirms LCPS’ place as a leader in community-based healthcare delivery.”

The unveiling is part of a week-long recognition of Paramedic Services Week, a national campaign celebrating the essential work paramedics do in emergency care, preventative health, and community outreach. This year’s theme — “We Care. For Everyone.” — reflects the values that continue to guide LCPS’ work every day.
