The following document has been compiled to provide residents with more information related to the comprehensive leak detection program and precautionary watering ban in place for Almonte Ward.

Q: Why are you doing this?

A: To isolate the location of a significant watermain leak in order to protect our infrastructure related to the municipal drinking water system.

Q: How does the watering ban help in identifying a potential leak?

A: While the quality and quantity of water is not impacted, the high levels of production currently being experienced provide concern for the water-related infrastructure, including the wells and pumps. In order reduce overall system demand, a precautionary watering ban is now in effect. Please turn off any automatic lawn sprinklers or irrigation systems.

Q: What if I ignore the watering ban?

A: The watering ban is being implemented under Water Works By-law 24-092 and active monitoring will be done and enforced if necessary.

Q: Is the water safe to drink and use?

A: The drinking water remains safe for all forms of consumption and use. Both quantity and quality of the water will remain safe, however discolouration and lower pressure may be experienced during this time.

Q: What should I do if I experience discoloured water?

A: It is normal to experience discoloured water during the detection program. Anytime after the event between 1 and 4 a.m., run your water for approximately 10 minutes and this will clear up your water system.

Q: During the event, if I have no water what do I do?

A: Call the Roads and Public Works Department’s emergency after-hours number at 613-256-3167 and someone will respond to you. Staff are monitoring this line during the event.

Q: Is there anything else I can do?

A: Please notify the Municipality if you:

  • Notice any abnormal water or wet spots in your yard or around your home
  • Your sump pump is cycling more often than usual
  • Hear any noise around your water meter
  • If you see anyone beside the municipal staff or fire department accessing fire hydrants

Q: How long will the detection program take place?

A: Testing will take place nightly between 1 and 4 a.m. beginning Monday, June 23 and continuing throughout the week.

Q: Who is doing this work?

A: Work is being completed by municipal staff who are well-trained licensed operators, in association with Ontario Clean Water Agency.

Q: How will institutions like the hospital or retirement homes be affected?

A: Separate notices will be delivered to the hospital and retirement homes. The Municipality will be working with them ensure their services are not disrupted.
