Council Highlights – March 24, 2026

Tuesday’s meeting began with a presentation from Sheila Stojakovich about the Safe and Active School Review. Ms. Stojakovich is the grandmother of Archer Lowe, the R. Tait McKenzie Public School student who died in a tragic accident on his way home from school in June 2025. She provided feedback and suggestions on the review, including encouragement to consult with the public. Council received her presentation as information. Later in the evening, Cory Smith, Director of Roads and Public Works, presented the findings from the review during the Committee of the Whole meeting. This safety review was initiated by Council following the tragic accident on Paterson Street. Traffic engineers were engaged to undertake a review of all school zones within the municipality. Read the Safe and Active School Review for more details.
A public meeting was held to talk about a zoning by-law change for Frank Fisher Crescent. The change would adjust the minimum side‑yard setbacks for four empty lots in the White Tail Ridge subdivision. Council will look at this issue at a future meeting.
The Hard Surface Roadway Prioritization for Capital Renewals Policy was approved by Council. This policy explains how the Municipality decides which roads need work first. It uses things like pavement condition, asset information and service levels to make decisions, making the process clearer and more consistent. Before tendering or any work begins, the Director of Roads and Public Works will bring the annual road program to Council for final approval.
Council proclaimed April 11, 2026, as World Parkinson’s Day in the Municipality. This day helps raise awareness and support for people living with Parkinson’s disease, a fast-growing neurological condition.
Committee of the Whole also discussed the following items, which will be brought forward for approval at a future Council meeting:
- Recommendations from the Safe and Active School Review to improve pedestrian safety in school zones.
- Building condition assessments from the Municipal Space Needs Study.
- The recommendation report for Official Plan Amendment 28 – Rural Villages and Rural Vitality was deferred to a special meeting.
- Feedback and technical comments to be submitted to ALTO about the municipal impacts from the proposed high-speed rail corridor. A formal resolution and accompanying letter are also being developed.
