Community Growth 101

Welcome to a new series of spotlights that will be unfolding over the next few months aimed at why we grow, what drives growth and how we can manage it.

All communities struggle with rapid growth and change – Mississippi Mills is not alone. Growth is heavily driven by demographic factors including birth rates, life expectancy and migration. These changes happen both naturally and due to policy decisions made by the Provincial and Federal governments.

In this series of spotlights, we'll cover the basics of growth influencers, what the Municipality is doing to plan for growth, what is and isn't in the Municipality's control, and more!

Factors

  • Natural Demographic Changes

    • People in our Municipality have children and growing families! When young people grow up and want to stay in our Municipality, they also need places to live.

  • People Relocating to Mississippi Mills

    • Our Municipality is an attractive place to live! More people from bigger cities like Ottawa are moving to places like Mississippi Mills for the quality of life, amenities and atmosphere.

  • Federal Immigration Policies

    • Natural growth in Canada has been declining. If we want to continue prospering economically, immigration can provide us with the human resources needed to do so.

Looking ahead, this bi-weekly spotlight series will shed some light on:

  • What is MM2048 and why are we planning 25 years ahead?

  • What’s in our control and what isn’t?

  • Growth pressures

  • Planned communities and placemaking

  • How can we grow within these scenarios?
