To honour the 215 children found in a mass grave at a Kamloops residential school, all flags at municipal facilities in Mississippi Mills have been lowered to half mast until further notice.

I appreciate those Indigenous members of our community who have reached out to me and shared their personal experiences from residential schools and the intergenerational effects from this dark period.  A National Indian Residential School Crisis Line is available to provide support to former residential school students and those affected. Emotional and crisis referral services are available by calling the 24-Hour National Crisis Line at 1-866-925-4419.

I encourage residents of Mississippi Mills to set a pair of children’s shoes out on your steps in tribute and to remember the 215 children taken in Kamloops and the lives of all Indigenous children who never came home, the survivors and their families who continue to bear witness to these tragedies.  Every child matters.
