Progress Flag

In celebration of Pride Month, Mississippi Mills Council voted to install Progress Pride crosswalks in three locations across the Municipality.

At their May 18th meeting Council passed a motion declaring June as Pride Month to support inclusion awareness and the two-spirited, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (2SLGBTQ+) communities in Mississippi Mills. As a further demonstration of support, Council directed staff to work with Pride in Mississippi Mills to identify suitable locations for the installation of Progress Pride crosswalks. Mississippi Mills will also be displaying a Pride banner at the Almonte Old Town Hall for a second year.

To bring focus on inclusion and progress within 2SLGBTQ+ communities, the newly painted crosswalks will feature the Progress Pride design. While retaining the widely recognised six-stripe rainbow design as a base, the Progress variation adds a chevron along the hoist that features black, brown, light blue, pink, and white stripes to bring marginalized people of color and transgender individuals to the forefront.

Each ward will have a Progress Pride crosswalk. In Almonte the crosswalk will be located at the bottom of Mill Street crossing Main, in Pakenham it will be across Elizabeth St. and in Clayton it will be located near the Clayton General Store. These crosswalk were made possible in part thanks to generous community donations.

Later in June Council and Senior Staff will be participating in inclusive awareness sessions facilitated by Pride in Mississippi Mills.
