Are You Prepared

May 2, 2021

The Council of the Corporation of the Municipality of Mississippi Mills has proclaimed May 2 – 8, 2021 as Emergency Preparedness Week. A national annual event that traditionally takes place during the first full week of May, Emergency Preparedness Week raises awareness and encourages residents to become better prepared in the event of an emergency.

Natural disasters may be beyond our control, but initiative can be taken to reduce the risk and impact of whatever emergency we may face. Individuals, communities, governments and the private sector all share responsibility in emergency management and the common goal of preventing and managing disasters.

“Basic emergency preparedness starts at an individual level”, stated Chief Chad Brown of the Mississippi Mills Fire Department. “If an emergency happens in our community, it may take emergency responders time to reach you. Every individual or family should be prepared to take care of themselves for a minimum of 72 hours.”

How can you and your family be prepared? These three simple steps will help you protect and take care of yourself and your loved ones during a crisis.

1.    Know the Risks: It is important to know the risks in your community to be better to prepared for their impact.

2.    Make an Emergency Plan: Creating a plan will help you and your family know what to do in case an emergency.

3. Build an Emergency Kit: The kit should contain everything you and your family will need to stay safe and comfortable for up to 72 hours and should be assembled considering the specific needs of your family members.

This week, the Municipality of Mississippi Mills will be sharing resources to help you take action and be prepared. Let’s create a culture of preparedness together.
