Highlights of November 7, 2017 Council Meeting

Teri Devine, Agriculture and Rural Economic Development Officer, was on-hand to make a presentation about the new Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs Resource Guide. The guide will help communities leverage agricultural assets and also identify ways in which municipalities can help support and grow the agricultural community through economic development opportunities. The final version of the Resource Guide is expected to be available January 2018.

Council supported an initiative put forward by the Active Transportation Committee that would see the creation of a working group, comprised of Pakenham community members, to develop a plan for a trail system in and around the hamlet of Pakenham.

A seven-year fixed price contract with the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA)was approved by Council. OCWA will be responsible for the operation of the wastewater treatment facility, water treatment facilities, and sewage pump stations.

A new micro-distillery is one step closer to opening in Almonte. Last night, Council approved the site plans submitted by Liquor Labs to build a distillery in the Business Park. The owners of the new distillery were on-hand to answer questions about the distilling process and how they are working with the University of Ottawa to ensure that any by-product is safe to the environment.

Councillors opted to redesign the existing Welcome to Mississippi Mills entrance signs to include larger fonts and the names of the three wards. The aim is to have the new signs installed in 2018.

A proposed list of priorities and timelines for the implementation of the newly adopted Communications Plan was accepted by Council. The plan is to implement key tactics identified in the communications plan in 2018.  The overall goal of the proposed communications activities is to increase transparency, be proactive, and to foster positive community engagement.

A main priority for the Municipality has been to finalize an updated Community Official Plan (COP). Next steps include a special council meeting on November 14th at 5:00 p.m. to discuss the Natural Heritage Systems and an Open House on December 14th at 6:00 p.m. (location to be announced).
