Earlier this week, the Government of Canada announced the designation of March 11, 2021, as National Day of Observance for COVID-19.

The step is being taken, on the anniversary of the first known Canadian Covid-19 death, to commemorate the people who lost their lives as well as the significant impacts all Canadians have all felt during the pandemic.

In his statement, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said “COVID-19 has infected over 864,000 Canadians and has had an immeasurable impact on how we all work and learn, connect with friends and family, and live our daily lives. All Canadians have experienced sacrifice and loss over the past year. Our kids have missed birthday parties, seniors have felt isolated from the ones they love, and for far too many, this virus has meant the loss of their job or the closure of their business.”

In solidarity with the rest of the country, the Municipality of Mississippi Mills will recognize this national day of significance by lowering the Canadian Flags at all Municipal facilities on Thursday, March 11th.

As we come to the year mark of what was once thought to be a 3 week fight against COVID, we reflect on the impacts that have been felt across the globe and in our own community. Mississippi Mills will be recognizing the significant local losses due to COVID-19 on Wednesday, March 31st,” explained Mayor Lowry.

These somber anniversaries serve as a reminder not only of what we have come through, but also that we must remain vigilant and continue to follow Public Health guidelines. This crisis is not over, and many are growing weary. As always, remember your neighbours who may be struggling. There are safe ways to reach out and support each other. Together we are stronger.”

More details on the Municipality of Mississippi Mills recognition of Covid-19 losses will be announced next week.
