Mississippi Mills Community Awards were developed to recognize and honour individuals for their contribution to life in the Municipality. Council recognizes that outstanding efforts, actions, and achievements of these individuals significantly and positively impact the social, cultural, or civic life of Mississippi Mills and its residents.

The 2024 nomination period is now open! Nominations are due April 29, 2024 by 12 p.m.

 HOW TO MAKE A NOMINATION:

Any person or organization can nominate an individual by completing the appropriate nomination form and sending the signed form to the postal or email address below. Self-nominations will not be accepted. Except in the case of the Key to the Municipality award, sitting members of Municipal Council are not eligible to place nominations.

 PROCEDURES: 

Annually, the Municipality of Mississippi Mills will put out a call for nominations for the Community Awards. Nominations will be submitted to the Municipality of Mississippi Mills (Clerk’s Office). For 2024, nominations are due April 29

  • The Community Awards program will be promoted for no more than four weeks and no less than two weeks. Advertisements will be posted on the Municipality’s website, Facebook, and Instagram pages. It will also be sent out via e-news to subscribers. Posters promoting the program will be posted at both library branches and all municipal public facilities.

  • Deadline for nominations will be posted and promoted each year. This information will be available on the Municipality’s website, Facebook, and Instagram pages. It will also be sent out via Mississippi Mills e-news to subscribers. Posters promoting the program will be posted at both library branches and all municipal public facilities.

  • Nomination forms will be made available electronically on the Municipality’s website or by request through the Clerks or Community Services Departments.

  • A minimum of two testimonial letters (no longer than two pages each) from individuals (other than the nominator) who have direct knowledge of the value and impact of the nominee’s achievements and who support the nomination. Please ensure that the contact information (address, telephone number and e-mail) of the testimonial writer is included in the letter. Letters should detail specific activities or contributions of the nominee that supports the specific award category.

  • Self-nominations and nominations of family members are not accepted.

  • Posthumous nominations will not be accepted.

  • During the first few years of this program, it is understood that multiple recipients may be selected in each category. Staff reserve the right to limit recipients due to capacity.

  • A Community Awards Selection Committee will complete a thorough review of all nominations.

  • After reviewing and considering all applications, the Community Awards Selection Committee may contact the nominator to recommend a more appropriate category.

  • To maintain the surprise for the award, staff will submit an information report to Council at an in-camera meeting.

  • The Community Awards Selection Committee will include the Mayor, the Manager of Community & Economic Development and the Clerk.

  • After Council receives the report for information, staff will contact the recipients via their nominee(s).

  • The Mayor will make a personal call to all award recipients to let them know they have been selected to receive a community award.

  • Following the confirming vote by Council, the Clerk /or his/her designate(s) will forward the chosen Senior of the Year candidate nomination form to the Province.

  • The Mayor will present the awards at a meeting of Municipal Council or at an event hosted within the Community. 

Rules for all nominations:

  • Nominators cannot be family members.

  • Nominators may only nominate one person per year.

  • Nominations can only be for individuals; couples and organizations will not be considered.

  • Nominators cannot provide a support letter to support other nominations in the same year they have submitted a nomination.

  • Nominations must include two support letters from individuals other than the principal nominator.

  • Support letters are individual and should come from one or two people.

  • Additional support letters are welcome.

 DEFINITIONS:

YOUTH: For the purpose of these awards a youth is considered 12-21 years of age.

SENIOR: An individual 65 years of age and older.

ELIGIBLE NOMINEES:

  Inspiring Youth

  • Current resident of Mississippi Mills
  • Aged 12-21 (at the time of nomination)

  Outstanding Senior Citizen

  • Current resident of Mississippi Mills
  • Aged 65+ (at the time of nomination)

  Exceptional Volunteer 

  • Current resident of Mississippi Mills
  • Volunteer activities must occur within Mississippi Mills
  • Nominees must have volunteered with two or more different organizations in the Municipality

  Community Builder 

  • Residents (past or present) of Mississippi Mills
  • Community building contributions must have occurred and impacted Mississippi Mills
  • Nominees contributions should be demonstrated to have impacted on more than one group or organization

  Key to the Municipality Award

  • Past or present resident of Mississippi Mills, significant visitor

 Welcoming Community Champion (NEW for 2024)

  • Current resident of Mississippi Mills
  • Demonstrated impact must be for initiatives in Mississippi Mills

  Business Champion (NEW for 2024)

  • Current resident of Mississippi Mills
  • The demonstrated impact must be supporting the Mississippi Mills business community
INELIGIBLE NOMINEES (ALL AWARD CATEGORIES):
  • Sitting members of Municipal Council
  • Residents currently appointed and sitting on a Municipal sub-committee
  • Mississippi Mills Municipal Staff Members
  • Nominees who are no longer living
