Ward Almonte

I grew up on the family farm near Brandon, Manitoba. My husband Mike and I lived in Winnipeg with our daughter until 1991, when we moved to Ottawa. We lived in Orleans and the Byward Market before moving to Almonte in 2005. We love the small town feel and interest in the arts in Mississippi Mills. Like most prairie people, we found the curling club and Legion great places to meet people and feel at home in the Friendly Town. We met hundreds of Ramsay and Pakenham folks through friends and our volunteer work as drivers for the Cancer Society and members of the residents’ advocacy association, PRATAC. My interests are reading, arts and crafts, writing, swimming, sewing and spending time with grandkids.

My background is broad. I worked in social services, information technology and litigation resolution. I like learning new things and have never stopped: from my English/Psychology major in Manitoba to IT management and negotiation and mediation in Ontario. I had the privilege of taking specialized instruction from the late Dr John Yuille in statement analysis and memory. This year I completed a couple of online programs at the University of British Columbia. I volunteered with the United way in Winnipeg and Ottawa and the first Rape Crisis Centre in Winnipeg. Before Council, I sat on the Board of Directors of the former Pakenham Ramsay and Almonte Advocacy Coalition and the advocacy committee of the National Association of Federal Retirees. I am the Council member on the Mississippi Mills Library Board, the Heritage Committee and the Finance and Policy Committee. This is my first term on Council.
