RSS Feeds and podcasts will become mainstay to this web site; it will allow you, the visitor, to receive all news, events and video presentations via any RSS browser or podcasting application. But before you take advantage of this convenience, there are some basics to learn!
WHAT IS AN RSS FEED?
RSS is no longer an acronym! Its definition has been changed so often, that most simply use the convenient: Really Simple Syndication. Its just that, a simple way for you to receive news and events via web browsers that help you read them. If properly set up you no longer have to return to a web site to keep track of news, its delivered right to your computer every time you log onto the web. Once you "subscribe" to the RSS Feed on the Mississippi Mills Town web site, you will receive all new news and events we post to the site in your RSS newsreader software.
Each RSS reader has a different way of 'subscribing' to a feed. To subscribe to the Mississippimills.com RSS news feed, simply click on the orange RSS icon. You will get a summary page of news articles. You will then, typically, be given a way to subscribe to that feed. Look for it in your RSS feed browser window somewhere. Every time you start that browser, you will see the latest news from Mississippi Mills!
WHAT IS A PODCAST?
A podcast is simply a means to deliver both audio and video to an audience. The initial uses of this new broadcasting technique was for delivering updated audiocasts to the iPod or iTunes (www.itunes.com). Now we can view podcasts using iTunes on our PC or Mac. More importantly, like the RSS news feed, we can 'subscribe' to specific web site podcasts and automatically receive the latest presentations in your iTunes browser. Each time you start iTunes, it looks for all the podcasts you have subscribed to, and downloads the latest presentations.
Setting up for podcasts
The most convenient Podcast browser is Apple's iTunes. Download and install iTunes and you will be able to subscribe to any podcast by either a subscribe option on the podcast's web site, by adding www.mississippimills.com to your list of podcasts, or by finding the podcast in iTunes's Podcast directory.
